With the holiday season coming up, the Northeastern community has really shown how giving it can be. Ever since the devastating Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan hit the Philippines a month ago, our fundraising efforts have seen overwhelming support.
Barkada, Northeastern’s Filipino student group, has spent the month collecting donations benefitting UNICEF’s relief efforts through our “Help Heal the Philippines” campaign. We held t-shirt sales, and collected generous donations from faculty – including an offer from President Aoun to match our total donation! We have also planned events such as Yoga for Yolanda, during which yoga instructors Kathleen Castro and Nicole Hicks held sessions to raise money and help students de-stress during finals week. We also have a benefit concert in the works! “Tune Out the Typhoon” is scheduled for January 24, 2014 and will feature performances from YouTube artists, local talent, and maybe even a few surprise performances from our very own executive board members.
However, besides Barkada’s own efforts, we have been overwhelmed with support from other student groups and the Northeastern community as a whole. Thanks to the efforts of UTSAV, and other collaborators such as the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA), the Korean-American Student Association (KASA), and the Resident Student Association (RSA), the dance competition “Dance For Me” was able to collect money to benefit typhoon relief. Sigma Sigma Sigma also showed support by holding “Zumbathon for Philippines Aid,” while Northeastern University Athletics offered their “Chuck-a-Puck” proceeds as well. Let’s not forget the countless emails that Barkada received from various students and faculty, all showing their sentiments after such a tragedy.
Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan was a catastrophe that has hit home for many of us, but Barkada has experienced incredible support from the Northeastern community and couldn’t be more thankful. Happy holidays, and as we say in Tagalog, maraming salamat sa lahat (thank you very much for everything).
